Growing and moving low-mass planets in non-isothermal disks

چکیده
Aims. We study the interaction of a low-mass planet with a protoplanetary disk with a realistic treatment of the energy balance by doing radiation-hydrodynamical simulations. We look at accretion and migration rates and compare them to isothermal studies. Methods. We used a three-dimensional version of the hydrodynamical method RODEO, together with radiative transport in the fluxlimited diffusion approach. Results. The accretion rate, as well as the torque on the planet, depend critically on the ability of the disk to cool efficiently. For densities appropriate to 5 AU in the solar nebula, the accretion rate drops by more than an order of magnitude compared to isothermal models, while at the same time the torque on the planet is positive, indicating outward migration. It is necessary to lower the density by a factor of 2 to recover inward migration and more than 2 orders of magnitude to recover the usual Type I migration. The torque appears to be proportional to the radial entropy gradient in the unperturbed disk. These findings are critical for the survival of protoplanets, and they should ultimately find their way into population synthesis models.

On Shocks Driven by High-mass Planets in Radiatively Inefficient Disks. I. Two-dimensional Global Disk Simulations
Recent observations of gaps and non-axisymmetric features in the dust distributions of transition disks have been interpreted as evidence of embedded massive protoplanets. However, comparing the predictions of planet–disk interaction models to the observed features has shown far from perfect agreement. This may be due to the strong approximations used for the predictions. For example, spiral ar...
متن کاملMigration of Protoplanets in Radiative Disks
Context. In isothermal disks the migration of protoplanets is directed inward. For small planetary masses the standard type I migration rates are so fast that this may result in an unrealistic loss of planets into the stars. Aims. We investigate the planet-disk interaction in non-isothermal disks and analyze the magnitude and direction of migration for an extended range of planet masses. Method...
متن کاملPossible Rapid Gas Giant Planet Formation in the Solar Nebula and Other Protoplanetary Disks.
Gas giant planets have been detected in orbit around an increasing number of nearby stars. Two theories have been advanced for the formation of such planets: core accretion and disk instability. Core accretion, the generally accepted mechanism, requires several million years or more to form a gas giant planet in a protoplanetary disk like the solar nebula. Disk instability, on the other hand, c...
متن کاملPlanet Formation around Stars of Various Masses: Hot Super-earths
We consider trends resulting from two formation mechanisms for short-period super-Earths: planetplanet scattering and migration. We model scenarios where these planets originate near the snow line in “cold finger” circumstellar disks. Low-mass planet-planet scattering excites planets to low periastron orbits only for lower mass stars. With long circularisation times, these planets reside on lon...
متن کاملDiffusive Migration of Low-Mass Proto-planets in Turbulent Disks
Torque fluctuations due to magnetorotational turbulence in proto-planetary disks may greatly influence the migration patterns and survival probabilities of nascent planets. Provided that the turbulence is a stationary stochastic process with finite amplitude and correlation time, the resulting diffusive migration can be described with a FokkerPlanck equation, which we reduce to an advection-dif...
